Born to a clanswoman in the highlands where Ross and Argyll meet, Muirchertach was a different child. No one quite knew what set him aside but his manners were peculiar. Quick of wit for one so young and with a voice that could not be ignored when he wanted too. It is only when in his tenth year it became clear he was a bastard of the Slainge U'Niel, ruling Earl of Ross the root of some of his peculiarities was to be explained. That line has been the source of rumours for a long time, indeed whispers out of earshot speak of not being wholly of the blood of man.
Regardless of those specific rumours, the young lad found himself another bastard of the prolific Earl. Growing up in a small town in the borderland, and a youth not wanting. For all that could be said of the Earl, he did see that his many offspring were provided for. At a young age Muirchertach joined a band of warriors of a few young men and womenkeeping their mountainvalley homes secure. They did this as much by stealing likely sheep and raiding for weaponry, as by holding undead or other raiders at bay. A small band, they were sworn to eachother like bloodbrothers, a bond he treasured deeply.
The exact details are muddled but what rumours bring forth is that the father of one in his band was a bigotted follower of the One God. When this lower chieftain discovered that his son was not just in a brotherhood with followers of the Old Religion, but amorous with another lad from a rival clan, one with possible fey blood the man lost it. When Muirchertach found his lover beaten to an inch of his life, a great public argument was had. What happened there are no witnesses to tell, yet after the death of the young man, his father was dead soon after. An axe blow to the skull and his broch (pictish fortification) aflame. When two more of the men sent after Muirchertach were found dead, he was declared outside of the law.
Some hard years later found him in Caithness, where man does not care for southern laws. Swearing his arm for a year and a day to a local chieftain he found acceptance and even respect in a place he did not expect. When challenged on his peculiarities he fought his challengers in duel of with and combat. And in time he found that anyone can rise to a place of honour in the northern clans. Putting his knowledge of the southern highlands to good use he dwelt at the courts of several chieftains, advising on southern ways, and rode out against their enemies.
Over the last decade they have founded sworn bands aking to clans upon themselves. Some of the band of his youth travelled with him those years past, others came later and mingled with men and women from both Caithness and throughout the north. In practice the Dùthchas are a loosely organised group of warrior bands sworn to eachother, mutual oaths forming the bond between the individual groups. Fighting both for reputation and coin, their bonds are recently making them some of the greater organised groupings in the north. One of the groups is in fact heavily invested in commerce, both provisioning the other bands and trading their gains beyond their area. The bands have connections throughout the highlands, and some have even fought undead in the woodland approaches of the Aelven lands.
As far as there is no one hierarchy, all pay attention when Muirchertach raises a point and he can be seen as the nominal speaker for the bands. Ever since the comet has reached the sky a gleam has come into his eyes, and it is clear to those who know him his gaze is set further than that of the local chieftains. Indeed, many are listening to his ideas for they hold an end to the slow decay.
He has taken to call upon his disparate connections, making overtures to both men under arms, familial connections, those of the mercantile class. Time will tell what this will bring.
